SB2410 Matte Masonry Enhancer [FED VOC]

ShoreBest Matte Masonry Enhancers are moderately high solids treatments for darkening or changing the surface appearance of masonry. Typically they are used on cementitious substrates where a color enhancement is desired. When applied sparingly they have been used to bring the color of two slightly different brick surfaces to an acceptable appearance when there has been a change in the color of the brick due to either changes in the manufacturing material or a change in manufacturer between the original construction and a later addition or alteration.

SB 2410 and SB 2412 can also be used to mask acid burns in brick surfaces that have been abused by the use of inappropriately strong masonry cleaning acids. The material will mask the burn for a long period of time but is not to be considered a permanent cure for the problem.

The performances of SB 2410 and SB 2412 on substrates are identical and both meet the US EPA guidelines for VOC content. The SB 2412 OTC VOC 400 has been formulated with a special blend of solvents that meet the more strict VOC guidelines as specified by the OTC Model regulations. SB 2412 contains less than 400 grams/liter VOC as calculated by the method that excludes the volume of exempt solvents. It is a violation of state and/or local law to purchase the federally compliant products and use them in a more restrictive jurisdiction. None of the products should be diluted before application. Consult your state or local environmental regulatory agency if you are unsure of the restrictions in your area. These products are not considered “breathable” when applied at a rate heavier than about 400 square feet per gallon. Application to vertical masonry surfaces is not recommended as spalling from freeze/thaw damage may occur. For vertical applications consider the use of the more breathable, waterborne products SB 2418 High Gloss Masonry Sealer or SB 2750 Water Based acrylic Cure and Seal. As the cured film can be slippery when wet, an anti-slip additive is highly recommended and should be mixed into the enhancer to prevent a slipping hazard.

Preparation

Before applying to a walking areas, a commercial anti-slip additive or fine sand should be mixed into the sealer.

Dilution and Coverage

Dilution: Do not dilute — test application recommended.

Coverage: 200 to 400 square feet per gallon — dependent upon substrate and other conditions.

Application

Apply to a clean and dry surface. Application may be by brush, medium nap rollers and, in some cases, low pressure spray. If it is desirable to have no change in the color of the mortar joint, application may be limited to brushes only.

SB 2410 / SB 2412 should not be used indoors unless there is adequate ventilation. Avoid application when fumes can be drawn into the interior of a structure unless air vents and other means of ingress of the odor have been closed. SB 2410 / SB 2412 are designed for use on horizontal surfaces. Applications to foot traffic surfaces may cause slippery conditions when wet. The addition of an anti-slip agent like H&C Shark Grip or BonTool Gator Grip is recommended. Horizontal applications can lead to acrylic blush if there is no moisture barrier beneath the surface. SB 2410 / SB 2412 can be applied sparingly on vertical surfaces where reduced vapor permeability is not a concern. SB 2410 / SB 2412 act as water repellents. Do not apply heavier than 400 square feet per gallon per coat. If a heavier film is desired for heavy traffic areas, apply a second coat after the first coat has dried. Heavy application in a single application may result in sealer “ponding” in recessed areas and subsequent blisters or haze in the dried film.
