000 COPPER STAIN REMOVAL SYSTEM

Copper stain is the name given to the unsightly green deposits often found on masonry surfaces below copper, bronze, or brass roofing, flashing, plaques, or decorative elements. It is caused by atmospheric pollutants dissolving some of the copper and transporting it to the masonry surface where it reacts to form insoluble copper salts attached to the masonry. Dense masonry such as granite and cast stone or light accumulations on other substrates can often be cleaned in one step. Heavier buildups accumulated over decades on more porous substrates like sandstone, limestone, concrete and marble may require multiple steps for complete removal. The steps are listed in order of effectiveness and complexity. Once the stain is removed, consideration should be given to preventing it from reoccurring by either sealing the source of the copper or applying a suitable water repellent to the masonry to prevent absorption of newly dissolved copper.

Copper Stain Removal System Products

  • SB 2380 CSR Gel
  • SB 2381 CSR Liquid
  • SB 2382 CSR Poultice
  • SB 2382 CSR Poultice Additive

Procedure Step 1

SB 2380 CSR Gel should be applied liberally with a stiff fiber brush to a relative clean surface. If the masonry also has a high buildup of industrial soot and oils, the effect of SB 2380 CSR Gel can be enhanced by prior cleaning the masonry surface with SB 2140 Masonry Restorer NA to allow better absorption of SB 2380. The cleaner will almost immediately turn blue indicating that it is dissolving the copper stain. Brush agitation will help expose new layers of the cleaner to the stain for faster removal. Wet down the area beneath the stain with water to reduce the possibility of stain absorption during rinsing. After a dwell time of 10 to 15 minutes remove the cleaner with a pressure washer. After the surface water has dried, reapply SB 2380 and repeat the process until the cleaner no longer turns blue.

Using a leaf blower or similar devise can shorten the wait time between applications. To determine if all the stain is completely gone, allow the surface to dry — this may take several days. In some situations there are copper salts that have deeply penetrated the substrate and they can wick up to the surface after several days. These are often removable with reapplication of SB 2380. Sometimes in light colored marble, stains are visible but deeply imbedded in the masonry. In this situation, the more involved procedure outlined below is required.
